毎年6月初旬～10月中旬限定で行われる木曽川の鵜飼は一見の価値あり。そもそも鵜飼とは、海鳥の一種である鵜と鵜匠が息を合わせて川魚を獲るという1300年前から受け継がれる伝統漁法。危険を感じると光のほうへ逃げる川魚の習性を利用し、かがり火を焚いた舟で船底を叩きながら魚を水面に誘導、それを鵜が捕らえる。1人の鵜匠が操る鵜は10羽にものぼり、巧みな手縄さばきはまさに職人技だ。遊覧船は鵜舟のすぐ脇にまで近づき、時にはかがり火の熱気を頬で感じられるほど。威勢のよい鵜匠のかけ声とともに夜の木曽川に幻想的な風景が広がる。

From early June to mid-October, cormorant fishing on the Kiso River is an unforgettable spectacle. Practiced for over 1,300 years, this traditional method involves skilled fishermen (usho) working in harmony with cormorants to catch river fish. Taking advantage of the fish’s instinct to flee toward light, fishermen strike the boat floor while guiding the fish with blazing torches, allowing the cormorants to capture them. Each usho handles up to ten birds, their masterful rope techniques a true display of craftsmanship. Sightseeing boats draw close to the fishing vessels—so near that guests can even feel the heat of the flames. As the usho call out with vigor, the nighttime Kiso River transforms into a breathtaking, almost otherworldly scene.

The hotel offers exclusive stay packages combining cormorant fishing viewing with a dinner featuring ayu (sweetfish).

At the BAR Yoyama, the décor evokes the lanterns of the Inuyama Festival floats and the koyomi-bari (decorative paper layering) motif found in the National Treasure tea house “Jo-an” in the adjacent garden.
