苧麻(ちょま)の繊維から作った糸で織られる織物を“上布”という。一反（約13メートル）分の糸を手積みで作るには、実に約2年を要する。その糸で織られた、薄く軽やかな宮古上布は、江戸時代から高貴な人々の夏の装いとして重宝されてきた。また、大宜味村喜如嘉で受け継がれる芭蕉布も、糸芭蕉の栽培から織り、仕上げまでを手作業で行う稀少な“自然布”だ。こうした沖縄の伝統織物を日本一取り揃える「銀座もとじ」の泉二弘明会長は語る。「風がするりと抜けていく極上の涼感。ほどよいハリがありながら、信じられないほどのやわらかさで肌に馴染みます。非常に手間がかかるため、今では極めて貴重な存在です」。これらの生地はいずれも国の重要無形文化財に指定されている。日本が誇る“涼“の極みである。一

Textiles woven from ramie fiber yarn are known as jofu. Making a single bolt (roughly 13 meters) of jofu by hand takes as much as two years! The Edo aristocracy were great fans of thin and light Miyako Jofu. Bashofu from Kijoka in Ogimi in northern Okinawa is another rare natural fabric that’s entirely hand-made, from the cultivation of the Japanese banana fibers through to the weaving itself. As Keita Motoji, chairman of Ginza Motoji, which has Japan’s largest selection of such traditional Okinawan textiles, says: “These fabrics are unbeatably cool-feeling because the air passes through them so easily. They keep their shape nicely yet are incredibly soft and feel fantastic against the body. Making them takes so much time and effort that they’re extremely precious today, and both fabrics have been designated Important Intangible Cultural Assets. They’re the pinnacle of cool comfort and Japan can be justly proud of them.”

芭蕉布
Basho-fu

糸芭蕉のやわらかな繊維のみを使うため、着尺一反に約200本もの原木を要する。戦後に一時途絶えたが、人間国宝の故・平良敏子さんにより大宜味村喜如嘉で復興された。

About 200 banana trees are needed to make enough thread for a single kimono, because only the softest fibers of the plant are used. The craft briefly went extinct after World War II, but was revived by Living National Treasure Toshiko Taira in Kijoka, Ogimi.

宮古上布
Miyako Jofu

トンボの羽のように薄く軽やかな夏の最高級布。仕上げに糊付けし、樫の台で3キロの木槌を3時間から4時間打ち続ける“砧打ち”によって、独特のしなやかさと艶が生まれる。紺地の絣模様が多い。

The finest of summer fabrics, light and thin as a dragonfly’s wing! Miyako Jofu is starched and then pounded with a wooden hammer on an oak stand for three to four hours to give it its unique suppleness and shiny finish. Kasuri patterns on indigo dyed navy blue are popular.

八重山上布
Yaeyama Jofu

草木による多彩な染料で染め上げ、白地を基調に織られることが多い。織りあがった布は、5月頃に天日乾燥し、さらに海水に浸して色を定着させる“海晒し”という独自の仕上げが施される。

Yaeyama Jofu features patterns woven into a white background using threads dyed with a variety of plant-based dyes. Once weaving is complete, the fabric goes through a unique finishing process called umi-zarashi, where the bolts of fabric are left to bleach in the sea for 4/5 hours.
