目の前に流れ落ちる滝。水しぶきや冷気までも感じられそうな迫力だが、どこか静謐で神秘的な雰囲気に引き込まれる。作者の千住 博は日本を代表する芸術家のひとりだ。伝統的な日本画の技法を踏襲しつつ、森や滝といった自然のモチーフを抽象表現主義に根ざしたミニマルな表現で描く。代表作の《ウォーターフォール》は、実在の滝をモデルにした風景画ではなく、水や重力、時間の流れといった自然の摂理そのものを描いた作品。どこまでもピュアな“滝という概念”を美しいと感じるのは、生命の根源的な部分を揺さぶられるからだろうか。

The waterfall fills your field of vision, so powerful you can almost feel the spray and cool air rising—and yet somehow tranquil and mystical enough to draw you never deeper. The man who painted it, Hiroshi Senju, is one of Japan’s best-known artists. Senju applies traditional Japanese painting techniques to natural motifs like forests and waterfalls in a minimalist style rooted in abstract expressionism. Waterfall, his best-known work, is not a painting of a real waterfall, but a depiction of the natural order itself: water, gravity, and the flow of time. Perhaps the concept of a waterfall holds such endless beauty because it seizes and shakes our life at its most primal part.

In the natural setting of Karuizawa, an art museum filled with light

「明るく開放的な、今までなかったような美術館を」という想いに応えて設計された軽井沢千住博美術館。敷地の地形を生かした緩やかな傾斜や、大小4箇所ある総ガラス張りの吹抜け空間など、軽井沢の森と建物が溶け合うかのようなデザインが心地いい。多くの美術館では作品保護の観点から日光はご法度だが、ここではシルバースクリーンとUVカットガラスによって光を制御。また、日本画で用いられる岩絵の具は鉱物などを原料としており変色しにくいという。吹き抜けや美術館周囲の植栽が生き生きと茂る夏にこそ訪れたい美術館だ。

The Hiroshi Senju Museum Karuizawa was designed to be a bright, open space unlike any other museum. The building sits amid the forests of Karuizawa so comfortably that it almost seems to melt into them, with gentle slopes following the lay of the land and no less than four glass-walled multi-floor spaces. Daylight is discouraged at most museums for art conservation reasons, but the Hiroshi Senju Museum uses silver screens and UV-cutting glass to limit light instead of banishing it. The greenery that grows in and around the museum is especially vital in summer, making this the best season to visit.

美術館には、軽井沢で80年以上にわたって愛されるベーカリー、ブランジェ浅野屋が併設。定番人気のフルーツライは、ドライフルーツやナッツをたっぷり練り込み、石窯で焼き上げる逸品。もちもちとした生地でモッツァレラチーズとミニトマトを包んだ「トマトとモッツァレラ」、ふんわり食感のバゲットなど多彩なパンのほか、焼き菓子やシャルキュトリも並ぶ。

The museum is accompanied by a Boulangerie Asanoya, one of Karuizawa’s favorite bakeries for more than 80 years. Boulangerie Asanoya’s ever-popular rye bread is filled with dried fruit and nuts and baked in a stone oven, and the shelves are also stocked with other treats: donuts with tomato and mozzarella inside, soft baguettes, cakes, cookies, and charcuterie.
