夏祭りの時期、街に神社にずらっと連なる提灯は、日本の夏の風物詩として欠かせないもの。提灯の歴史は古く、16世紀には現在のものに近い折りたためる形に。こちらはLED等を入れてシェードのようにも使えるが、オブジェとしても存在感抜群。大阪で約100年の歴史を持つ老舗・秋村泰平堂が木型から手仕事で作る提灯を、ビームス ジャパンの別注で、ポップな色のボーダー柄に。

The lanterns festooning the streets and shrine precincts in Japan’s festival season announce loud and clear that summertime is here. Japanese lanterns have a long history, having assumed a collapsible form similar to that of today back in the sixteenth century. While you can put an LED light inside them and use them as lightshades, they also have tremendous character as decorative objects. Akimurara Taiheido, a century-old store in Osaka, has added colorful poppy stripes to lanterns handmade using wooden molds.

“萬古焼”（ばんこやき）は、三重県四日市市を中心として作られる焼き物。耐熱性に強く、温かみある風合いが特徴だ。萬古焼でおなじみなのがこの“蚊やり豚”。このなかに蚊取り線香を置けば、風で消火してしまったり、灰が飛ぶなどの心配がない。豚型の蚊やりは、どこか懐かしさ漂うニッポンの夏の定番。これを、ビームス ジャパンが別注し、釉薬を上下にかけ分けてツートーンカラーに仕上げた。和室にも洋室にもインテリアとしてなじむモダンな表情が魅力。

“Banko-yaki” is a form of stoneware from Yokkaichi, Mie, known for thermal resistance and warm colors. Pig-shaped mosquito coil holders like these are classic Banko-yaki pieces. More than just cute, they also shield burning mosquito coils from the wind and keep the ash from spreading on sudden gusts. Custom-made for Beams Japan, these coil holders combine striking two-tone palettes with a retro form factor straight from Grandma’s porch. Versatile and stylish, they’re equally at home in Western- and Japanese-style interiors.
