和紙製のうちわを水にひたし、気化熱による涼しさを楽しむ──。
『万葉集』にも詠まれるほど古くから日本の涼を象徴してきたうちわだが、その中でも夏ならではの「水うちわ」の世界へ飛び込もう。

Fans have been a symbol of cool in Japan for so long that they appear in the ancient Man’yoshu poetry anthology.

夏の光を受けてキラキラと透き通る、3年の歳月をかけて完成した家田紙工株式会社の「水うちわ」。熟練の職人によって一本一本丁寧に仕上げられている。うちわに張られた和紙の表面には天然ニスが施され、水で濡らしても破れずに気化熱による涼しい風を楽しめる。

Every Ieda Paper-Craft water fan is painstakingly hand-crafted over a three-year period by experienced artisans. The washi stretched over the frame is finished with natural varnish for water-resistance, so you can enjoy the cool that comes from vaporization without damaging the paper. The beauty of its translucence in the summer light is another bonus.

うちわに張られている和紙は、岐阜県・美濃の手漉き和紙職人により作られる「雁皮紙」と呼ばれるもの。雁皮と呼ばれる素材は、一般的な和紙に使われるよりも細く繊細で、漉き手泣かせな紙と呼ばれる程、制作難易度の高さで知られる。途絶えかけたその技術を一流の職人が蘇らせ、強く、均一かつ透明感のある和紙に仕上げているのだ。

The washi used for these water fans is known as ganpishi. Produced in Mino, Gifu, by tesuki washi artisans, its raw material has even finger fibers than regular washi. Ganpishi takes such skill to produce that it’s said to make even master artisans weep. The craft of making it was on the verge of dying out before being revived by first-class artisans who pride themselves on the strength and even translucence of the finished product.

絵柄は光を透過した時に美しく見えるよう工夫がされた、「提灯絵」と呼ばれる伝統の伎。
Painting techniques also used for lanterns ensure that the picture shows beautifully when the fan catches the light.

台座が付属し、飾っておけるのがうれしい。
Each water fan comes with a base for display—a thoughtful touch.

熟練の職人が目にもとまらぬ早業で竹を扱い、骨組みを仕上げていく様子。
Veteran artisans work almost too quickly to follow as they assemble each fan frame from bamboo strips.

手で1つずつ塵を取り除くことで、フイルムと間違える程の透明感のある和紙が完成するのだ。
Picking out imperfections one by one results in washi so translucent it almost looks like film.
